COMPETITIONS AND COUNTRY MUSIC FEATURED AT FLEAMASTERS’ WATERMELON FESTIVAL

Ft. Myers, Florida - June 14, 2011 - Folks are practicing seed spitting techniques for this summer’s Watermelon Festival, Saturday, July 16 at Fleamasters Fleamarket, 4135 Dr. M.L. King Jr. Blvd., Ft. Myers.

The day-long event features Seed Spitting, Speed Eating, and Best Watermelon Recipe competitions. Musicians and country music artists will perform from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the Music Hall stage. Children are welcome at the Kid’s Craft Area, and will be entertained by free face painting and balloon animals with Turkleberry the Clown. Fleamasters shoppers may enter a chance drawing to win a new iPad 2. And, of course, everyone may sample sweet, juicy Florida watermelon.

“By chance, we planned to hold Watermelon Festival July 16, on the exact day of Fleamasters’ 25th anniversary,” said Linda Steele, Marketing Director. “It seemed to be a perfect time to give back to the community and have a day of good, old fashioned summer fun. We’ve packed the Watermelon Festival with music, giveaways and prizes. Performers include guitarist Scott McKean and our own Country Sounds Band.”

Chris MacArthur and the Florida Cracker Boys will headline the event. Tagged as “the next great country music artist,” Chris MacArthur has performed with Tammy Wynette for more than five years, and has accompanied numerous other artists including Bo Didley, Ronnie Millsap, Waylon Jennings, and Brooks and Dunn. MacArthur has appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the David Letterman show.

“We’re challenging folks to come out for the watermelon contests,” Steele said. There will be many chances to win. For Seed Spitting and Speed Eating, medals, prizes and bragging rights will be awarded for each of three age groups: 10 and under, 11 - 16, 16 and over. If anyone breaks the seed-spitting world record (68-feet, nine and ⅛-inches) they’ll win $500 cash from Fleamasters Fleamarket.

Cooks can show off their culinary talents by entering their best watermelon dish in the Looney Spoonz “Best Watermelon Recipe” competition.

Fleamasters Fleamarket is open for shopping, food and fun 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Open in 1986, the market offers 400,000 square feet of shopping, including outlets for favorite name brands, fashions, resort wear and home decor. Plus an eclectic mix of arts and crafts, garage sales, and antiques and collectibles.
